The Botswana Football League (BFL) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Gambling Authority as part of efforts to improve governance, transparency and operational efficiency in local professional football.
Under the partnership announced on Tuesday, the Gambling Authority becomes the league’s official support partner for league administration.
The BFL said the collaboration would draw on the Authority’s expertise and regulatory oversight to promote fair and transparent administrative practices within the league.
The Gambling Authority will also provide advice on compliance, regulatory frameworks and responsible gambling practices. According to the BFL, these interventions are intended to safeguard the integrity of league activities and strengthen public confidence in professional football.
BFL Acting Chief Executive Officer Idah Moinisi said the partnership would support the league’s efforts to improve its structures and operations.
“We are delighted to have the Gambling Authority on board as our support partner,” Moinisi said.
“Their support will be instrumental in strengthening our league’s structure and operations, ensuring transparency and fostering sustainable growth in Botswana’s football ecosystem.”
The partnership comes at a time when the BFL is under pressure to professionalise the domestic game and improve the administration of its competitions. Governance, financial sustainability and the protection of football against activities that could compromise the integrity of matches remain important issues for professional leagues.
The involvement of the Gambling Authority is also significant because of the close relationship between professional sport and the betting industry. The BFL said responsible gambling would form part of the Authority’s advisory role.
According to the league, the partnership demonstrates its commitment to collaboration and innovation while positioning Botswana as a potential regional example in the administration of professional football.
